Ocean Falls, The beginning
There can be no history of the Motor Yacht Wyrill without first a short look at the history of her original homeport of Ocean Falls, British Columbia, Canada.
Ocean Falls is located at the head of Cousins Inlet, North of Vancouver Island, Situated at the base of what was a large waterfall from Link Lake. The site created a perfect setting for a hydro-electric plant to power a sawmill and paper plant.
In 1906, a crew from the Bella Coola Pulp and Paper Company, which had also acquired leases for the surrounding 260 acres of timber lands, began clearing land on the steep slopes of the Cousins Inlet shore below the falls to build a sawmill and a town to support the construction workers.
By 1912, the dam had been erected and the pulp mill began operating. The population had grown to 250. In 1915, a new company, Pacific Mills Limited took over the operation of the mill and added new capital to further develop the Dam, a Paper Mill and the Town.
By 1950, the population had grown to over 3,500 and Ocean Falls was still growing.
See the History of Ocean Falls for more on-line of the town.
